Cotton clothing is a poor choice as it retains moisture for long periods. Polypropylene and other synthetic fabrics are better. Wear dark clothes as they dry quicker. If you are hiking in areas that are known for tick infestation, it is a good idea to wear light-colored clothing.

When hiking in hot sun, it is important to be aware of sunstroke. You should be aware of the dangers of excessive fluid loss when hiking in summer. This can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. A wide-rimmed hat with a strap is recommended. This provides better protection against direct sunlight and hot winds.

Hiking Boots & Equipment

My hiking pants should be comfortable and have lots of pockets to store granola bars, snacks, or anything else that I might need on the trail.

I prefer hiking pants with lower legs. They can be zipped up and converted to shorts. Although it may seem small, when it is hot, putting your bottom legs in the pack and continuing hiking feels great.

Shirts and Base Layers

The base layer is second only to your boots when it comes to hiking. The base layer should be able to wick away sweat and maintain the proper temperature. You must be comfortable. Try a variety of materials and ensure you are happy with your choice.

When you move on to fleeces and shirts, the old saying that a lot of layers are better than one or two thicker layers is true. A thicker coat is recommended for hiking in cold areas. However, most hikers will be fine with just a few layers and waterproofs.
